Dana M. Gallagher, MPH, PA
Associate

Dana has consulted in the health care and HIV/AIDS arenas for over twenty years. Believing that politics, medicine, and humanitarianism are undeniably intertwined, she has worked to create a better health care delivery system, with special attention to people with HIV and women. Dana has extensive experience as a facilitator, clinician, health educator, medical and grant writer, organizational effectiveness consultant, and conflict mediator.

In the ’70s, Dana began her clinical work as a Physician Assistant (PA) in feminist health centers, providing patient education and advocacy, along with direct clinical services to women. During this time, Dana became fascinated by the women’s health movement, expanding her educational and clinical efforts to include writing on health issues of interest to women. She co-wrote the abortion chapter in the internationally acclaimed book, Our Bodies, Ourselves.

Dana has continued to write, teach, and educate on a variety of health related issues, especially HIV/AIDS, women’s health, and violence prevention. She has taught in a variety of venues, including teaching a general interest HIV/AIDS course online, coaching actor/educators in school-based HIV prevention theatre programs, and writing HIV-related chapters for a PA textbook.

Trained in the U.S. and Europe, Dana also mediates conflicts, whether they are inner, interpersonal, organizational, or systemic. Since she has worked in public, private, and HMO settings, as a clinician, administrator, and educator, she provides a holistic perspective in troubleshooting health care delivery problems. She is extremely interested in supporting HIV providers and helping them prevent the burnout that comes with the demands of their working environment.

For the last few years, she has been studying conflict mediation, both in California and in Europe, and is happiest when helping individuals and groups to function better and more happily while working through conflict. Recently, Dana has used these skills to help create a better functioning Board of a local nonprofit organization, facilitate team building at a clinic, and coach new road managers in a touring theatre company.

Dana’s idea of a great time is walking on the beach with her girlfriend, playing with their cat Ed, reading biographies, watching foreign films, or eating licorice (black only). Alternatively, she finds European travel quite enjoyable.
